We are very excited to offer our first heavyweight denim! We pushed the limits of our 4-Way Stretch Selvedge to create The “Mammoth” 17.5oz 4-Way Stretch Selvedge. Nick Noguchi worked closely with a renowned Japanese mill to develop this one of a kind denim. For these new jeans, we went with a special Bordeaux Red selvedge ID, polished silver buttons, and a navy leather patch.

Heavyweight denim is uncommon because of how difficult it is to produce. Combining this heavyweight with our 4-Way Stretch Selvage results in a next level denim exclusive to Kato. This denim has the same look and comfort of our lighter 4-Way Stretch Selvedge, but is thicker and even more durable.

Why heavyweight denim? The thickness of the denim plays a big part in how the denim fades. The thicker the denim, the more pronounced the creasing will be. This creasing contributes to an increased contrast and definition of the fades. The stunning results of a pair of well worn heavyweight jeans is why denim connoisseurs around the world seek out these heavier denim weights.

The new “Mammoth” 17.5oz 4-Way Stretch Selvedge is available in Raw indigo denim and two distinct washes that have been carefully aged by hand. These three versions represent the different stages of denim jeans over the first several years of wear.

The original Raw indigo denim is a blank canvas for you to develop your own unique pair that ages according to your lifestyle and experiences. The Raw Indigo “Mammoth” is available in The Pen Slim, The Hammer Straight.

These jeans are heavier material and they take time to break in.  For a comfortable fit, we advise opting for one size up.

Heavy Duty Built Tough

Best of the Hammer line up in my opinion. You can tell a lot of thought went into the design element. The jeans are a bit tough and first wear, but they’ll become better over time. Do yourself a favor and cop a pair.

Excellent denim, could use some length.

I’m a fan of soaking before starting the journey and did that with this pair. The denim quality is excellent and the 4-way fabric is outstanding per usual. Kato’s Hammer cut is straight with a a reasonable slimness that for me (size36) drops to a 8.25” leg opening after the soak.

I’m finding the length did shorten up a bit post soak by about .5 or .75”. This brings the length to 33.5 or so for me, which makes cuffing tough and stacking near impossible. I wish these larger sizes had a longer inseam 35 or 36 but that’s the only complaint. But. Still a five star product.

The Best

Well, I have been looking for the perfect jeans for many years. Honestly, it has been a frustrating journey. I finally found it in 17.5 Hammer Straight Indigo. Perfect fit, detail and construction. The 17.5 oz is more comfortable than any of the 12 and 14 oz I’ve had. Kato has mastered the 4 way stretch selvage. I bought 3 pair. Have worn no other denim since they arrived. I’ll be a customer for life.
