I can tell what kind of day it’s going to be by the way the horse comes out of the stall.
Some mornings he’s ready to go. Other mornings he wants to stand there and make me wait. I don’t mind either way. I brush him down, check his legs, pick his hooves. It’s a routine I know by heart. There’s something satisfying about taking care of the little things before you head out.
When I’m around the horses, I don’t want to think about what I’m wearing. I need to stay focused on what I’m doing.
That’s probably why I’ve always gravitated toward good denim. It’s straightforward. It holds up. You can wear it hard without worrying about it. KATO jeans have become part of that routine for me. They’re comfortable enough to spend hours in the saddle, but they still have the weight and structure I want from a pair of jeans.
You notice the difference when you’re riding. Your legs are constantly moving. You’re getting on and off, leaning forward, shifting your weight. The stretch gives you room to move without making the jeans feel like something other than denim.
And they don’t need to stay clean. Out here, that would be a losing battle anyway.
Dust gets on everything. So does horse hair. There’s mud when it rains and sweat when it gets hot. The jeans take all of it and keep going. After enough time, you start seeing the places where they’ve been used most. The creases settle in. The color changes. They start looking like yours.
That’s the part I like.
I’m not looking for clothes that look brand new every time I put them on. I’d rather have something that shows some mileage. Same goes for boots, saddles, leather. The good stuff changes with you.
Today is just one of those lazy days around the ranch. After a few rounds, we’re back at the fence. He’s doing his thing. I’m doing mine. There’s no particular reason to be anywhere else.
