Kato’s respect for denim reaches back decades. Our years of experience and research resulted in our own version of the sought after denim of the 50s. This fabric has been crafted with meticulous precision to replicate the uniform texture of the faded vintage denim collected for the Kato archives.

To make this a timeless pair of jeans, we chose our straight cut, “The Hammer” and the modern slim cut “The Pen”. The 12.5 ounce, 100% cotton denim does not have stretch but it will break in and mold to you, making it a pair you will want to wear for years. We wanted these jeans to be vintage down to the core details, so we introduced a button fly, using donut style laurel leaf buttons, which have been acid dyed to give them an authentic aged look. We also added a pop of color with a red leather patch, our own twist on the original. We are offering several versions of the Classic Slub Denim that represent different stages of aging.

Raw Indigo - Although This denim has never been washed, it is sanforized, a process that takes out almost all the shrinkage. The Raw Indigo denim has been dyed with a medium shade of indigo, giving it the tone you would find on a pair of jeans made in the 60s. After a few washes, the indigo deepens and becomes more vibrant before fading. The even weave, combined with the rope dying process, is perfect for someone who wants one of a kind fades that reflects the wearer’s lifestyle.

Shrinkage

Raw denim has up to 2% shrinkage while it would be 1% for washed denim after wash but they will also stretch out again by being worn over time.

My New Pair of GO TO Jeans!

Do they look great - yes. Do they fit great - nope, they fit perfect. I love wearing these and like that I don't feel like I have a pair of "brick jeans" on. I've received 2 unsolicited compliments on them and will be ordering another pair when my size restocks. I'm thinking one pair for working in the shop and one for going out. I'm really looking forward to how they break in.

I'm 6' and 168 lbs. and ordered a size 33 - one size up. They've been through the wash 3 times and air-dried and fit great.

They shrink

I own quite a few pair of Kato jeans going back many years now and these 12.5oz natural slub raw are the first disappointment. I own several Hammer styles including other raw styles and they have all broken in nicely and fit perfectly. These 12.5oz indigo raw shrank a solid 1/2 size if not more for me. For the record, I wash cold, delicate cycle with Kato's jean wash, and I lay flat to dry. I've tried to give these time to break in, but at this point I've given up. The denim is very rigid, and like all Kato jeans, they are very well made. I love the look and feel of the denim, but I just don't love the fit after washing (and wearing every day for a rather uncomfortable week). I highly suggest going up a size from your regular Hammer size for this particular style.

Great straight fit denim

After days of looking for a good raw denim in straight cut I found "the hammer" here. The fit & finish is incredible and I was happy I got the right size (i'm 5'7" 160lb and got 31). One thing that drew me in was that the 5th pocket has covered rivets (or none at all?) and thats a small detail that pays dividends in not scratching my phone. One thing that could be improved but maybe is a problem specific to me is that the front pocket bags could be longer. I haven't worn raw denim in maybe 10 years and the cell phone fade back then was more manageable because phones were much smaller. I have to make a habit of removing my phone before sitting down. I am hoping with further break-in that this will get easier!
