HIROSHI KATO

The Pen Slim - Indigo Raw Air 11.5oz Selvedge

$228.00

Heavily Textured, Lightly Worn

In the pursuit of innovation we have created our latest achievement in denim. The idea for Selvedge Air was born out of the love for old vintage denim and the need for comfort. We wanted to introduce a denim that had the look and feel of a 15oz denim but one felt light and very comfortable when worn. After a very long development process with a highly capable mill in Japan, we were finally able to make this vision a reality.

Instead of using the usual 3 X 1 weave of standard denim, we implemented a 5 x 1 weave. This creates a denim with a higher surface thread count but a lower overall thread count, making it lighter and still durable. The low tension yarns and loose denim weave contribute to the thicker look of the denim while maintaining its light feel. The overall result is a vintage textured denim that looks like heavy weight and feels like a lightweight.

• Slim fit

• Indigo Raw 11.5 oz

• 98% COTTON 2% POLYURETHANE

• 4-Way stretch selvedge denim

• Made in USA

• Model is 6'2" and wearing a size 32.

Our premium denim is inspired by the classic vintage blue jean. Our Premium Japanese 4-Way Stretch Selvedge denim story starts in Japan where our fabric is developed at one of the oldest denim mills. We blend a unique 4 way stretch material with selvedge denim to create a specific amount of stretch and comfort you wouldn’t typically get with selvedge denim. This 360 degree of stretch gives the wearer comfort from every angle no matter what they are doing.

Our 4-Way Stretch selvedge fabric is weaved using vintage shuttle looms. Rolls of denim fabric are then brought into our workshop in Los Angeles where each pair goes through a 60 to 90 day process of cut, sew, washing and testing. With 4 fits available in multiple weights (see fit guide) and washes, the style options are endless.

First (fit) impressions

Just received these and wanted to add some color since I was looking at reviews for fit info before ordering and had to guess on a few things. I've owned only a few pairs of selvedge so not a denim head by any means. As others said, quality seems super high. Don't have a great reference point tbh and time will tell on break-in and wear.

5' 8", 155#, athletic build with short legs/long torso, find 29" waist is perfect in most pants so ordered a 29". My true inseam is like a 26.5" so 27" with a slight break works for me usually. Went with a 29" hem assuming 1" for cuff and 1" shrink but find it's a bit too short for a cuff. Would go 30" or keep 33" and double cuff next time. As another reviewer said, I put these on and woof, thought I whiffed on sizing. Had to suck it in to get it buttoned. Kicking myself not going up to 30" but wearing around house for 10 minutes, waist stretched and I could get two fingers in. Wouldn't get too discouraged on first wear.

The only thing I'd watch out for here is the hip measurement, which is not included in the size guide. Even after waist stretch, the crotch and butt feels real tight, which ends up mashing your stuff up front. Feels like the pants is a bit more made for skinny folks with smaller hip abductor muscles. Rise is same as my perfect fit jeans fwiw. Again, hope to get some stretch but would just watch out for this if considering. Most athletic jeans/chinos brands I have give a little more room in the seat out of the box.

Fit is more straight slim but I tend to wear tighter jeans. Size guide is correct on actual measurements below the thighs fwiw. With a small inseam, tailored slim fit 32"+ inseam pants tend to taper weird due to the pant being made for someone with a longer inseam. Would go with the Needle next time as I like a bit more tailor below the knees.

Really nice jeans. Top Quality.

Just received my Slims and what an amazing pair of jeans. Depending on the brand, I can be anywhere between a 32 and 34 so I took a chance and and ordered the 33s and they fit perfectly. The workmanship is topnotch, the looks are stylish, but not trendy. All in all, I'm very happy with the quality and service. Going to order their Blade coated indigo jacket while it's on sale.

Sizing

Ordered size 34 of the Pen Slim 11.5 oz selvedge per the recommendation by Hiroshi Kato fit guide -- typically wear a 34 in AG jeans. 34 is too small -- go up a size.

Ordered the cargos, as well, in a 34 and they fit great.

Love the cargos can't wear the jeans.

Hi Keith,

We're sorry to hear that The Pen Slim 11.5oz selvedge jeans did not fit.
Please note that our raw denim takes longer to stretch out and will be tight the first few wears.

Great JEANS

I really like these pants even though they fit quite well - at the same time they are very comfortable.
Super quality denim, great to the touch, perfect workmanship - highly recommended!

PS I don't know what will happen after the first wash... :-)

Thank you for recommending our jeans, we appreciate it!

Awesome Denim

These jeans took a couple of wears to break in but will now become one of my go-to's. They have the perfect amount of stretch and have already received several compliments. I'm 5'7" and 155 lbs and typically wear a 30 in most other brands and went with a 31 on these and the fit is spot on (no belt needed). I own two pairs of Kato Pen Slims and about to order some more. Probably the only denim I'll buy going forward.

Thank you for your review, Michael! The raw fit usually takes a few wears before breaking in, but once they do they become a comfortable everyday jean.
